What You Need to Know About the VW Clean Air Act Violations

On September 18th, the EPA issued a notice of violation of the Clean Air Act to Volkswagen. It alleges and VW has admitted that software installed in certain vehicles circumvents EPA emissions standards for certain air pollutants. Vehicles involved include four-cylinder Volkswagen and Audi diesel cars, model years 2009-2015.

About 482,000 cars are affected in the U.S., 11 million worldwide. The affected diesel models include:

  • 2009-2015 Jetta
  • 2009-2014 Jetta Sportwagen
  • 2012-2015 Beetle
  • 2012-2015 Beetle Convertible
  • 2010-2015 Audi A3
  • 2010-2015 Golf
  • 2015 Golf SportWagen
  • 2012-2015 Passat

According to the EPA, the emission violations do not present a safety hazard and the cars remain legal to drive and resell. Vehicle owners do not need to take any action at this time. A recall has not been issued but it is likely that one will be issued once a remedial plan is developed and approved by the EPA. Any recall notice that owners receive will come from Volkswagen and will provide information about the recall and how to get their car repaired at no cost to them.
